What is this phenomenon that men seem to get when afflicted with a cold? 'Manflu' is the colloquial term, and yet there is no equivalent term for women (although some might argue that women constantly complain more - as I can attest to that, I can be a horrible complainer).
This article by the BBC suggests that the female sex hormones in the form of oestrogens may provide women with some sort of 'brake' on the inflammatory process by inhibiting an enzyme known as Caspase-12.
However, would men rid themselves of the manflu by getting treated with oestrogens? There's going to be some side-effects for sure - would you swap manflu for manboobs?
